Breed Information: Pomsky

By the American Pomsky Kennel Club (APKC)

Origins

There is no definitive answer but original Pomskies began making an appearance around 2012. They started being actively bred by a trio of family breeders around 2012 through artificial insemination, and really became popular in 2014. Since then hundreds of breeders around the world have taken the Pomsky into their breeding program.

Due to this rapid expansion, the social media community of Pomsky breeders has implemented strict guidelines for DNA test reports to be included with litters, as scammers have passed off Husky puppies as Pomskies. There are vast concerns about quality being produces as pedigrees have been spotty and private.

The Future of the Pomsky: AKC

In the interest of moving forward with this amazing breed for AKC recognition, like-minded breeders have joined together to bring this breed to the next level, be recognized by the AKC. We absolutely love the dogs produced from mixing the Pomeranian and the Husky. However, much more is needed for AKC. The American Kennel Club requires a minimum of 3 breeds.

Currently, only American Eskimo is allowed as the 3rd breed as we progress to AKC. According to the AKC Judge from PomskyFest March 2019, he felt that the addition of the Eskimo added greatly to the overall structure lines and helped supported the “square” structure of the Husky. Many of our breeders have already decided to add the "Eskie" into their lines. Breeders are reporting better structure and a more silky textured coat with less daily shedding as they see the results of the addition of Eskimo into their lines.

However, the APKC® is not opposed to the thought of a 4th breed if considered and progressed scientifically. The last thing this emerging breed needs is a haphazard approach, or an “ooops, this breed showed up in my DNA so I think it should be added”.

If you’d like to join as an experienced breeder and follow the rigid testing protocols necessary as we experiment with other Spitz breed dogs to see if the experimental breed would bring about a benefit to the Pomsky, then please feel free to reach out at info@americanpomskykennelclub.org.
